Morocco Slips in Global Corruption Rankings, Now 87th Out of 180 Countries

Morocco has fallen in the ranking of the fight against corruption, according to the new Corruption Perception Index 2021 of Transparency International. The Kingdom is indeed in 87th place out of 180 countries.
With a Corruption Perception Index (CPI) score of 39/100, Morocco is ranked 87th globally, thus losing one place compared to the 2020 ranking and 7 places compared to 2019.
This poor score is the result of the "endemic" nature of the scourge in the country, Transparency Maroc pointed out, adding that Morocco continues to record a relatively "high" level of corruption.
For Azeddine Akesbi, a member of the Transparency Maroc office, the kingdom "is not making progress". The implementation of the law against corruption and the strengthening of mechanisms to fight this scourge are essential to improve Morocco’s ranking, he noted.
It should be noted that despite this poor score, Morocco is still better ranked than some Arab countries such as Egypt, Algeria and Lebanon. At the top of the ranking of Arab countries, the United Arab Emirates came in 24th position, while Syria is ranked at the bottom of the list.
