Moroccan Expats: 4 Essential Tips to Breeze Through Customs and Avoid Penalties

Passing through customs is often a source of stress for Moroccans residing abroad (MREs). However, by knowing the tax rules and procedures to be followed, it is possible to avoid penalties, delays and seizures. Here are four practical tips to get through Moroccan customs with complete serenity.
1. Prepare your supporting documents in advance
Always keep the necessary documents with you: invoices, tax refund forms, building permits, bank statements. In the event of a check, these supporting documents avoid delays, disputes and adjustments.
2. Check your purchases before leaving Morocco
The VAT refund applies to retail purchases over 2,000 dirhams including tax, transported in your luggage and declared to customs before leaving the territory. Presenting the invoices and the form is essential to obtain the refund.
3. Know the list of excluded products
Certain goods never benefit from duty-free: food products, tobacco, medicines (except for personal use), unset precious stones, weapons, private vehicles and their equipment. Transporting them without declaration results in seizure and taxation.
4. Regularize your vehicle under Temporary Admission (TA)
MREs can bring a vehicle to Morocco under the Temporary Admission regime. But the stay deadlines and conditions must be respected. Exceeding the authorizations results in fines and seizure of the vehicle.
Deadlines, tax refunds, exclusions, vehicle formalities and supporting documents are the five keys to getting through Moroccan customs without any unpleasant surprises. Anticipating these steps allows you to travel with peace of mind.
