Tragic Death of Swiss Tourist Highlights Agadir’s Escalating Stray Dog Crisis

A Swiss tourist on vacation in Agadir died after being bitten by a stray dog in the Taghazout area, north of the city.
"The deceased was playing with the stray dog that attacked her by surprise. The bite was considered minor and not serious by the specialists who provided her with appropriate care, immediately cleaning and disinfecting the wound, before administering a post-exposure vaccine," reports Al Akhbar. Despite this treatment, the Swiss tourist ultimately passed away.
This case related to attacks by stray dogs comes after a series of others. Recently, a young girl was bitten by a dog on the city beach and was rushed to the Hassan II hospital where she was taken care of by specialists. An elderly man, who was walking on the city’s corniche, was also attacked by a stray dog. "The worst was narrowly avoided thanks to the intervention of passersby who neutralized the stray animal, ensuring the victim was transferred to the hospital emergency room where she was admitted," informs the daily newspaper.
Stray dogs continue to sow terror in the city of Agadir and its surroundings. The figures are alarming. In a single day, "the competent health services in the city received no less than 70 victims attacked by stray dogs," indicates the publication, which notes that "the project of a shelter for stray animals in Agadir, launched with a budget of 26 million dirhams, on an area of 4.5 hectares with a capacity of more than 1,000 dogs and 200 cats, is struggling to materialize."
