Tragic Accident in Morocco: 16 Sub-Saharan Migrants Dead as Vehicle Plunges into Canal

Drama of illegal immigration in Morocco where 16 people died and 17 were injured in the fall of a vehicle into a canal located on the secondary road between Saidia and Nador.
Local sources cited by the MAP indicate that the accident occurred this Saturday morning at the level of the Laâtamna commune, in the province of Berkane, adding that the injured were evacuated to the provincial hospital for necessary care.
The same sources specify that all the victims are from sub-Saharan Africa.
An investigation has of course been opened by the gendarmerie services to determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy and "the ramifications of the organization of this attempted illegal immigration". The search continues to try to apprehend the driver of the vehicle, who fled just after the accident.
Morocco is one of the preferred routes for illegal migrants trying to reach Europe. In most cases, they hide in the vicinity of Ceuta and Melilla waiting to storm the border crossing or very often they pay clandestine organizations, sometimes several thousand euros, to reach southern Spain by boat, of course at the risk of their lives.
