Tourist Scammed in Marrakech: Henna Artist Charged $120 for $5 Tattoo

A foreign tourist filed a complaint this week at the tourist police station on Jemaa el-Fna Square in Marrakech. She accuses a "naqacha" of having swindled her.
The tattoo artist would have claimed 1,200 dirhams for a henna tattoo, an exorbitant price compared to the usual rate which generally does not exceed 50 dirhams, reports the site kech24.
Alerted by the victim, the tourist brigade agents quickly arrested the "naqacha" in question. Placed in police custody at the Marrakech police headquarters, she admitted the facts. The investigation is ongoing and the suspect will soon be brought before the public prosecutor’s office.
The behavior of henna tattoo artists denounced on social networks
Unfortunately, henna tattoo artists are willing to do anything to attract tourists visiting Marrakech. While some can be very insistent, others do not hesitate to hurl insults and come to blows over clients. Behaviors that are detrimental to the image of the ochre city, a very popular destination for national and foreign tourists.
Many victims have thus denounced these bad practices on social networks, describing Marrakech as a "place of fraud and scams". For some local players, the behavior of henna tattoo artists towards tourists is explained by the lack of training of these women and the laxity of the local authorities in the face of the situation.
