TotalEnergies Unveils $10.7 Billion Renewable Energy Project in Morocco

Total Energies CEO Patrick Pouyanné announced during the Combined General Meeting of Shareholders on Thursday, May 26, 2023, an ambitious renewable energy project in Morocco.
The project, combining wind and solar power, aims to produce and export electricity to Europe. With an investment of $10.69 billion by Total Eren, the company hopes to position Morocco as a global leader in the green hydrogen sector, through a project to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia in Guelmim-Oued Noun.
However, some obstacles remain, including the size of the site to be granted, estimated at 170,000 ha while the demand is for 187,000 ha, and a certain reluctance of the Moroccan executive to fully commit.
Despite these challenges, the project, which is expected to generate more than 10 GW by combining solar and wind energy, is scheduled to enter its active phase in 2025, promising many opportunities for employment and decarbonization of major sectors. The first electricity production is expected in 2027, with the ambition of establishing a local energy market of 4 terawatt-hours (TWh) and an export market of 10 TWh by 2030.
