Tomato Prices Surge in Morocco as Ramadan Approaches

The price tag dance continues at the Casablanca wholesale market. While consumers can breathe a sigh of relief on the meat stalls, the price of tomatoes is skyrocketing this week. A situation that occurs as preparations for Ramadan are in full swing.
The weekly bulletin, made available to the people of Casablanca by the City, is clear: the tomato is on the rise. It shows an increase of 1.30 DH/kg, reaching 6.80 DH/kg, compared to 5.50 DH/kg last week. Bad news for households, especially since this vegetable (or fruit?), essential to many culinary preparations, is not the only one to see its price soar. Onions and zucchini are following suit with respective increases of 0.5 and 1.5 DH/kg, settling at 5 and 5.50 DH/kg. Carrots, on the other hand, are negotiated at 2.80 DH/kg and cucumbers at 5 DH/kg. Only potatoes are bucking the trend with a slight decline, from 5 to 4.5 DH/kg.
On the fruit side, the market is calmer, although some products stand out. Avocados, for example, now cost 1 DH more, reaching 22 DH/kg. The same is true for imported bananas, which sell for 18 DH/kg. Local bananas also see a notable increase, going from 9 to 11 DH/kg. Strawberries, local and imported apples, on the other hand, maintain their prices, respectively at 18 DH/kg, 11 DH/kg and 23 DH/kg.
At the slaughterhouses, on the other hand, it is dead calm. Beef prices remain stable, oscillating between 75 and 88 DH/kg. The same goes for mutton, which remains between 115 and 120 DH/kg. A stability that, according to observations, reflects a certain balance between supply and demand.
