Tomato Prices Surge in Morocco: Government Cites Global Demand Ahead of Ramadan

Following the sharp increase in the price of tomatoes in recent weeks in Morocco, government spokesman Mustapha Baitas was expected to give the reasons for this surge that Moroccans have had trouble understanding.
According to the government official, this price increase is due to "the strong global demand", stating that prices in Morocco should see a decline in the coming days. This return to normal is highly anticipated, especially as the month of Ramadan approaches.
Mustapha Baitas explains that the price on the international market has reached 1.5 euros, which pushes Moroccan producers to export their production instead of selling it on the domestic market. In addition, intermediaries are accused of driving up prices.
The government spokesman affirms that prices should return to normal in the coming days following an agreement with transport professionals.
