The Madrid court of the National High Court, which deals with terrorism cases, sentenced three Moroccans on Thursday, May 27, to heavy sentences for their alleged involvement in the terrorist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils on August 17, 2017.

Moroccans Mohamed Houli Chemlal, Driss Oukabir and Said Ben Iazza, tried for membership in a terrorist organization, manufacture and possession of explosives for terrorist purposes, were sentenced on Thursday, May 27 in Spain, to sentences ranging from eight to fifty-three years in prison, reports AFP. The first was sentenced to 53 and a half years in prison, while the second was sentenced to 46 years in prison. The prosecution had requested 41 and 36 years against them respectively. Their effective sentence "would not exceed 20 years," the Madrid court of the National High Court specified. As for the third, the court sentenced him to 8 years in prison for having lent a vehicle and documents to the attackers, following the prosecution’s request.

These three Moroccan nationals would be involved in the two terrorist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils. Led by a jihadist cell, this double attack had left 16 dead in Catalonia in 2017. The Spanish police had killed the Moroccan perpetrators of these two attacks. As for the mastermind of the group, Abdelbaki Es Settay and the imam of Ripol, he was killed in an explosion that occurred in a villa in Tarragona.
