Thousands of Spanish Nationals and Moroccan Residents Repatriated from Morocco

Stranded in Morocco for nearly three months due to health restrictions, more than 12,000 Spanish nationals and Moroccan residents in Spain have been repatriated from the kingdom, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

In a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Spanish Embassy and the Consulate General in Rabat coordinated a new operation the day before, with the departure of a ferry from Tangier to Malaga. This ferry transported 912 Spanish and MRE passengers, to which are added 711 others who were repatriated on May 22 on board another ferry making the same journey.

These operations were carried out as soon as the Ministry of Health issued its order 410/2020, establishing Barcelona, Alicante and Malaga as entry ports capable of dealing with public health emergencies of international importance. They were carried out to meet the strong demand from Spaniards and Moroccan residents.

In addition, 4 new operations are planned on June 3, 4, 10 and 11 from Tanger Med. They follow the repatriation of nearly 340 Spanish nationals from Morocco on board two chartered flights on April 3 and May 7.

Efforts to ease security measures have been jointly undertaken by Morocco and Spain. The two countries have authorized the passage of 9,500 Spaniards and 4,500 Europeans via Ceuta and Melilla, for ten days, all assisted by the consular services of Spain in Morocco. 4 flights were also authorized by Morocco and scheduled until March 15, with Spaniards on board.
