Thousands of Moroccan Teachers Face Suspensions Amid Ongoing Strike

Nearly 4,000 teachers, mostly responsible for national and regional coordinations, are subject to temporary work suspensions. Disciplinary sanctions taken against them by the supervisory ministry, in reaction to their strike that has already lasted more than three months.
According to the daily Alyaoum24, citing a representative of the teachers’ coordination, the measures of temporary suspensions against the striking teachers continue. On Monday, teachers were again notified of suspension decisions, the same sources indicate, stating that "the coordinations are studying a response to these decisions". These sanctions come after the teachers’ decision to continue their strike, "despite the government’s response to several of their demands, including salary increases and the modification of the general status".
The decisions of temporary suspension were taken on the basis of Article 73 of the general status of the civil service. The teachers concerned are accused of "a set of irresponsible acts and behaviors constituting a serious error and a violation of your professional obligations", as well as "repeated and illegitimate absenteeism from work, thus depriving students of their right to stable and continuous education", and "incitement via social networks to carry out repeated work stoppages, thus hindering the normal functioning of the educational establishment".
The temporary suspension of work is accompanied by a suspension of the salary, with the exception of family allowances. The sanction runs until the disciplinary council meets to rule on these cases, within a maximum period of four months.
