Monday 2 March 2020, by
Thousands of protesters gathered on Sunday, March 1st in Ceuta to denounce the growing racism in the city.
This "historic march", the largest of the 21st century in the small Spanish enclave of Ceuta, brought together more people than expected. According to the local media, El Faro, all forecasts were largely exceeded, with a historic influx. While the police reported 6,000 people taking to the streets of Ceuta, the protesters put the total at 8,600. The same media reports that the slogan "for coexistence, respect and real equality" was displayed on the banners of the procession that guided several thousand inhabitants of the city.
The protesters, who left from the Principe neighborhood, chanted slogans against racism, xenophobia, fascism, and above all against the far-right party, VOX. This march, supported by 40 entities and political parties, also saw the presence of a large police force.
Once at the destination, not far from Avenida Sánchez Prado, a manifesto was read out to the marchers. For the spokesperson, only a people of conscience creates a society full of hope. He also invited everyone not to be drawn into mistrust, coexistence must not be broken.
The representative of the protesters also denounced the "extreme poverty, unemployment, precariousness, school failure, and marginalization". In the eyes of the protesters, "the enormous existing inequalities" are the "direct responsibility of our leaders".
