The United States Is Making Morocco Its African Hub for Drone Warfare

A delegation from the Ghanaian armed forces visited Vicenza, Italy, on July 21 and 22 to learn how the US Army designs, manufactures and maintains its small drones directly within its units.

The Ghanaian officials visited the drone laboratory of the US Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade. They studied the production, repair and training methods that enable military personnel to quickly adapt their systems to the needs identified in the field.

Washington is now helping Ghana create its own production capability. Accra wants to manufacture drones adapted to local conditions, reduce its dependence on imports and, ultimately, supply other West African countries, the US Army explains.

The United States is also considering coproduction with Ghana and wants to use its training grounds to test drones and counter-drone systems in high heat.

The Ghanaian experience should notably help improve battery autonomy, the resilience of the systems and their maintenance conditions in extreme environments.

Morocco Becomes the Point of Convergence

This partnership is not presented as an isolated initiative. The US Army states that it is progressing in parallel with the creation of the African Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center in Morocco.

Known as AMTEC, this joint initiative between Morocco and the US Africa Command is to bring together a drone academy, a multidomain training area and a military innovation center.

A division of roles is thus beginning to take shape. Ghana could develop production and testing, while Morocco would host African military personnel to bring their methods and level of drone proficiency closer together.

The training planned in Morocco will go beyond simple piloting. It is expected to cover intelligence, airspace management, electronic warfare and the neutralization of adversary systems.

Washington is thus building an African network in which several countries will contribute their training grounds, industrial capabilities or operational experience. Morocco is to become one of its main training and experimentation centers.
