Tangier Tragedy: Families of 29 Victims Demand Justice, Government Action

The bereaved families of the Tangier tragedy that claimed 29 lives have once again broken their silence. Five months after the tragedy, they denounce the government’s silence and demand justice and reparation.
The daily Al Massae reports that through a new letter addressed to the Head of Government Saad Eddine El Othmani, these families have once again expressed their cry of distress.
Specifically, the newspaper points out, the families’ demands concern the establishment of an independent commission of inquiry to determine the responsible parties, given that "there is no doubt about the involvement and responsibility of state institutions," the letter states.
Furthermore, the relatives also urge the Head of Government to intervene in order to benefit from "urgent financial and moral support" to alleviate their suffering. The families live "in conditions of great poverty," without social protection and in the continuous deterioration of their health, "in the absence of any support from the State," concludes the letter cited by the media.
For the record, a request had been filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office to conduct an investigation against the owner of this unit and all those who may have been involved in this incident, for involuntary manslaughter and bodily harm and violations of the Labor Code, the newspaper recalls.
