In Tangier, the Sohour drum under fire

In Tangier, the drum used to wake people up for the "Sohour", the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan, does not have a bright future ahead of it. And for good reason, voices are rising to call on the competent authorities to put an end to this Moroccan tradition because it is doing more harm than good today.
The time when the Sohour drum was an integral part of the month of Ramadan in Tangier, where people came with the drum to wake people up for Sohour in strict respect, is over. Today, it is teenagers and delinquents who use the drums to disturb the peace of the residents, during the late hours of the night. Sometimes, they especially bother women and children, causing them fear and anxiety, reports the local site Tanja24. A situation decried by many residents. Some call on the local authorities to take measures to put an end to this practice. Others, however, believe that the behavior of some teenagers and delinquents should not sound the death knell of this beautiful tradition.
The future of the Sohour drum is now in the hands of the authorities. Pending a decision, many Moroccans have been using electronic alarms or Ramadan-dedicated apps for years to wake up for the meal.
