Tangier: A Giant Flag Facing Spain
The city of Tangier is preparing to erect a monumental national symbol on its corniche. The municipality has launched a project to install a giant flag, designed to be visible from the Spanish coast, particularly Tarifa, located only 14 kilometers across the strait.
The emblem, whose surface is estimated between 30 and 50 square meters, will fly atop a 30-meter metal mast, the equivalent of a nine-story building. The ambition is to ensure permanent visibility: by day in clear weather from the European shore, and at night thanks to a specific lighting system that will illuminate the flag over the Bay of Tangier.
The city hall has released an envelope of 1.3 million dirhams to materialize this initiative. This budget covers the civil engineering work and the installation of state-of-the-art technical equipment. The structure will be fixed on a robust concrete base and the mast will be treated against oxidation and marine humidity. The construction standards have been calculated to withstand the extreme climatic conditions of the Strait of Gibraltar, where gusts of wind frequently exceed 60 km/h.
