Tangier Cracks Down on Illegal Shisha Cafes: Hundreds of Hookahs Seized

The authorities in Tangier have recently carried out a large-scale operation against the shisha cafes illegally installed on the city’s corniche. In total, nearly 500 hookahs and large quantities of smuggled shisha and alcohol were seized, and several managers and employees of these establishments were arrested.
Previous investigations into these shisha cafes had revealed the complicity of certain elected officials who take no action to limit the proliferation of these establishments in the city, despite repeated complaints from residents. Shisha cafes have gradually stolen the limelight from nightclubs, becoming the preferred hangout for Tangerians, including minors, to spend relaxing moments.
But the tragedy is that these shisha cafes are most often set up near primary (Ahmed Shawki school and Tariq Ibn Ziyad college) or secondary and technical (Ibn Battuta high school and Moulay Youssef technical high school) educational institutions, and not far from the Higher Institute of Tourism, exposing minors to the consumption of this narcotic.
