Tangier Cracks Down on Alcohol Vendors and Casinos in $2.8 Million Tax Evasion Hunt

The Tangier city hall has decided to track down sellers of alcoholic beverages and casino owners who do not pay their taxes, in order to recover 28 million dirhams in taxes. A financial windfall that continues to elude it.
The Tangier city hall wants to put an end to tax evasion. It has in its sights the sellers of alcoholic beverages and casino owners who evade the payment of taxes, reports the Arabic-language newspaper Al Akhbar. In the past, the former governing body was lax. The current leadership team therefore intends to play the card of firmness.
The new mayor, Mounir Laymouri, is counting on these taxes to replenish the city’s coffers, as the municipality finds itself forced to cede land to avoid bankruptcy. Taxes on the sale of alcoholic beverages would bring in some 16 million dirhams, while those imposed on casinos would reach 12 million.
