Court Halts Controversial Villa Project in Tangier's Rmilat Forest

Residents and environmental advocates in the city of Tangier have denounced the construction of a fence in the Rmilat forest, by what they call the "real estate monsters" who plan to implement a villa project there.

The Tangier Green Youth Movement announced the stoppage of the work on this wall in the Rmilat forest, considered the city’s lung. "The file is now in the hands of the competent court, after the activation of the legal procedure by the local authorities who inspected the site on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, and undoubtedly proved the validity of what the movement had previously raised regarding the illegality of the ongoing work," the movement said in a statement.

The movement calls for the demolition of this fence built in violation of the regulations in force, and wishes that the same procedure be applied to any possible cases that may arise in the city’s forests. The association has also invited its activists, as well as the city’s residents, to "prepare to directly accompany and support the ’wall demolition’ phase on the ground," specifying that a demonstration will be organized after the expiration of the 10-day legal deadline granted by the local authorities to the project initiator.

"The adoption of prior preventive procedures also remains a requirement from the local authorities of the city, as it is inconceivable that the city’s residents and its associations substitute the authorities in monitoring the legality of the work, controlling permits and construction, and counting and surveying the trees," insisted the Green Youth Movement, which recalls having transmitted to the authorities of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, a city planning plan aimed at preserving forests against the advance of concrete.
