Tangier Approves Seawater Desalination Plant to Combat Water Shortage

To address the severe water shortage, the city of Tangier has just adopted a project to build a seawater desalination plant.
A partnership agreement has been signed in this regard between the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Equipment and Water, the Tangier Regional Council and the Loukkos Hydraulic Basin Agency (ABHL) for the realization of the study of the project to build a seawater desalination plant. The goal is to promote "economic recovery and achieve sustainable and balanced development".
And this involves the implementation of a "well-defined strategy to meet the challenges related to the management of the growing demand for water, the cyclical return of drought periods, the depletion of groundwater reserves and the reckless waste of this vital resource", it is stated.
With a budget envelope of 22 million dirhams (MDH), the study will be carried out between 2023 and 2024, and a monitoring committee has been set up and will regularly draw up reports on the progress of the mission.
