Tangier Activists Push for Third Wastewater Plant to Combat Water Scarcity and Pollution

The Observatory for the Protection of the Environment and Historic Monuments of Tangier and several civil society associations in the city have launched a petition demanding the creation of a third wastewater treatment plant in Tangier. The petition is addressed to the president of the urban commune of the city of the strait.
Through this initiative, the signatories seek to contribute to increasing the amount of treated wastewater, reused for the irrigation of green spaces. A third wastewater desalination plant could help preserve drinking water as a vital resource and fight against pollution resulting from the discharge of polluted water into rivers and the sea.
For the Observatory, the petition is part of the consolidation of participatory democracy and the constitutional roles of civil society. In addition, the petition comes in a context marked by a water shortage, while demand is increasingly growing.
Currently, the city of Tangier has two wastewater treatment plants. There is the pre-treatment plant located in the locality of Bouknadel. It has an overall capacity of more than 170,000 m3/day. The second treatment plant is located in Boukhalef and its treatment capacity does not exceed 20% of the city’s liquid waste.
