Tanger Med Port Boosts Freight Capacity with New High-Speed Scanner

A third scanner is now available at Tanger-Med to control TIR transport trucks, the backbone of Morocco’s foreign trade. Since its installation, it has increased the processing and control capacity of the port facilities of this port platform by 30%.
Tanger Med wants to increase its freight handling capacity and remain the undisputed leader in the MENA region. According to the Moroccan port complex, this modern system can control 30 trucks per hour, bringing the total port capacity to 90 vehicles per hour, or one truck every 40 seconds.
To meet the expectations of port users, the scanner has been installed at the "Export Access", a platform through which import-export trucks transit. According to l’Économiste, this platform covers 19 hectares and can handle up to 2,100 freight units per day, containers and TIR trailers.
It also ensures dematerialization through the management of truck traffic in a record time not exceeding two hours. Unlike the system put in place at the beginning of the year to ensure dematerialization, the new scanner makes it possible to avoid any risk of congestion at the level of the physical control.
Following the increase in the flow of ITR trucks (more than 357,000 TIR trucks in 2019, i.e. a 30% growth), this speed offered by the new scanner has become more than an emergency. In 2019, imports at Tanger Med were a blessing, thanks to the PSA automotive plant in Kenitra. This performance should continue to increase after the health crisis due to the coronavirus, which has led to a pause in the production unit of these vehicles.
