Tanger Med 2 Port Boosts Capacity with New Cranes, Solidifies Mediterranean Leadership
Another plus for the port of Tanger Med 2. The 8 huge cranes are finally in place and operational at container terminal 3. It has already reached its full capacity.
The last two quay gantry cranes of the eight ordered by Tanger Alliance, the concessionaire of TC3 and designed by the company Liebherr, have now been delivered. Thus, the eight cranes installed increase the operational capacity of the TC3 terminal of the Tanger Med 2 port to more than 1.5 million TEUs and the overall capacity of the port complex to 9 million TEUs, thus strengthening its rank as the largest container port in the Mediterranean basin.
Moreover, "the handover of these cranes to Tanger Alliance is a key moment for the port. Tanger Alliance’s investment in Liebherr STS cranes will be rewarded by industry-leading productivity, low operating costs and the knowledge that the cranes will be available as needed to work on the world’s largest ships for many years to come," said Gerry Bunyan, Director of Sales and Marketing at Liebherr.
It should be noted that under the concession agreement that binds it to Tanger Med 2 (TM2), Tanger Alliance (a joint venture between the national port handling leader Marsa Maroc, the international port operators Eurogate and Contship Italia, and the world’s 5th largest shipowner Hapag Llyod, at Tanger Med 2), the TC3 concessionaire, ensures the realization of the superstructures and equipment, the recruitment of human resources and the smooth operation of TC3. To recall, the terminal covers an area of 36 hectares and has 800 linear meters of quays, founded at a depth of 18 meters.
