Suspect in Casablanca Student Murder Has Prior Manslaughter Conviction

The alleged murderer of Badr Bouljoihel, a 23-year-old man, a doctoral student-researcher at the Faculty of Science and Technology in Mohammedia, killed on the way out of a restaurant in Casablanca, is a man known to the justice system.

Revelations have been made about the main suspect in the murder of the young Badr. The one who is now nicknamed "Weld Tachroun", meaning "the son of the laborer", was involved in a fatal traffic accident. In 2018, he had been sentenced to 7,500 dirhams for involuntary manslaughter, as well as two other fines of 300 dirhams each, reports the Arabic-language daily Assabah. The widespread publication of the judgment on social networks has recently provoked the outrage of Moroccan Internet users. They cried out in indignation.

In the face of the outcry, the Attorney General at the Casablanca Court of Appeal provided clarifications. According to his explanations, the judgment circulating on social networks concerns the handling of this case at first instance. Dissatisfied with this judgment, the Public Prosecutor’s Office had appealed at the time. This is how in 2019, "Weld Tachroun" saw his sentence increased. He had been sentenced to one year in prison, a fine of 30,000 dirhams and the withdrawal of his driver’s license for a period of two years. Except that this judgment is not yet final, so it has not yet been executed. The victim’s father is a retired police officer. After learning that "Weld Tachroun" is the alleged murderer of the young doctoral student Badr, he called for the reopening of the judicial investigation into the accident involving his son.
