Survey: 90% of Women in Northern Morocco Experience Violence

Violence against women and girls is on the rise in northern Morocco. About 9 out of 10 girls and women in the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region have been victims of some form of violence at least once in their lifetime.
These statistics, published in a report by the Regional Directorate of the High Commission for Planning (HCP), are from the "National Survey on Violence against Women and Men in Morocco", conducted in 2019 (February to July) on a sample of women and girls aged 15 to 74 years old.

The survey took into account the geographical, social and economic representation of the target population composed of 1,140 girls and women and 285 boys and men in the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region.
In its report, the HCP notes that the rates of violence are higher in urban areas (90.8% compared to 83.1% nationally) than in rural areas (83.9% compared to 81.6% nationally), also noting a high rate of psychological violence (83.2%) compared to physical violence (38.6%) and sexual violence (29.9%). The HCP also reports economic violence (16.1%).
