Domestic Violence Surges 31% in Morocco During COVID Lockdowns

Gender-based violence increased by 31.6% during the periods of confinement and health emergency compared to the same period in 2019.
A total of 4,663 acts of various forms of violence against women were recorded during this period, the Federation noted during a conference on violence against women, held in Rabat. Among these acts of violence, psychological violence is in the lead with 47.9%, followed by economic violence with 26.9% and physical violence with 15.2%.
The president of the FLDF, Latifa Bouchoua, adds that in terms of reporting these forms of violence, the task is still great. "The listening and legal and psychological guidance platforms set up by the Federation and the Lddf-injad Network against gender-based violence, received 1,774 telephone calls to report violence from 1,038 women across the Kingdom."
During this meeting, organized under the theme "violence against women during the Covid-19 pandemic: assessment and testimonies", the participants from various organizations stressed that gender-based violence against women is the most widespread and persistent, constituting a flagrant violation of human rights.
Whatever the obstacles to their eradication, women victims of these types of violence must not lose faith in the future. To this end, getting rid of embarrassment and denouncing all forms of violence seems appropriate. Anas Saadoun, a member of the Club of Magistrates in Morocco, indicated that the coronavirus pandemic has confirmed the urgent need to respect the protection measures contained in the law on violence against women, published two years ago, the same source specifies.
