Survey Reveals Low Political Engagement Among Moroccan Voters

On the sidelines of this year’s elections in Morocco, the Institute of Social and Media Studies (IESM) conducted a survey to find out Moroccans’ views on the political class. The results of this survey, carried out on a sample of 875 women and men aged 18 and over, show that they are only very slightly interested in politics.

The survey recorded fewer women (15.2%) than men (84%). The majority of women say they are not interested in political affairs. Many of them refused the survey form. The results of the survey are also explained by the fact that 67% of the Moroccans surveyed say they have already voted in previous elections, 27.9% have never voted and 4.9% were not of legal age to do so.

Regarding the trust factor among the people surveyed, 60% said they cannot rely on politicians, 11.5% still trust them, 26.7% do not have total confidence in them, while 2.6% are undecided and do not know whether to trust them or not. The IESM survey also looked at citizens’ knowledge of political parties, their programs and their orientations. At this level, the results show that 42.2% of the people surveyed have a perfect knowledge of the political parties and everything that surrounds them, while 25.3% have an average knowledge, 22.3% have knowledge and information on some political parties while 10.3% of the people claim to have no information on the latter, reports Hespress.

When asked whether religion is a criterion in the choice of a political party, 84.2% of the people surveyed said that the religious criterion did not define their choice of political party. But around 11% said this factor was very important, and around 5% remained undecided. Regarding the influence of money on election results, 81.3% of the people surveyed say that money strongly impacts election results, 16.2% believe that the impact is limited, while 2.5% of the respondents say that these two parameters no longer affect election results.

Regarding the possibility of voting for a candidate on the basis of his sex or his age, 90.6% declare that they will not vote for a candidate just because he is a man or a woman, young or old.
