Survey: Physical and Sexual Violence Costs Moroccan Families $285 Million Annually

2.85 billion dirhams (MMDH), this is what physical and sexual violence costs Moroccan households. This is the result of a survey by the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
This survey was carried out with the support of UN Women, between February and July 2019, on a sample of 12,000 girls and women and 3,000 boys and men, aged 15 to 74, representing the various social strata and regions of the country, specifies Map.
Of all the women victims of physical and/or sexual violence in the 12 months preceding the survey, regardless of the context, 22.8% had to bear, either themselves or their families, direct or indirect costs of the violence, according to the HCP in its latest report.
Thus, the average cost per victim is around 957 dirhams, if we relate this figure to the total number of victims. The share of the urban environment in the overall economic cost of violence is 72% (2.05 MMDH), that of the rural environment is 28% (792 million dirhams (MDH)), details the media, which, relaying the same conclusions, points out that the average cost borne by urban victims (1,000 dirhams per victim) is higher than that of rural victims (862 dirhams per victim), namely that direct costs constitute the majority of the overall economic cost with a share of 82% (2.33 MMDH) against only 18% for indirect costs (517 MDH).
More than two-thirds of the overall cost of violence is due to the marital framework, with a share of 70% (an overall cost of 1.98 MMDH), followed by public places with 16% (448 MDH) and the family context with 13% (366 MDH).
What about the forms of violence? Nearly 85% of the overall cost concerns physical violence (2.4 MMDH) and 15.3%, sexual violence (436 MDH), the HCP report notes.
This national survey, which supports Morocco’s efforts in the field of gender equality, addresses the determinants of violence, social perceptions and the social and economic impacts generated by this violence on the individual, the household and society.
