According to a recent survey, an overwhelming majority of Moroccans are opposed to the legalization of extramarital sexual relations.
91% of the population is opposed to the legal recognition of extramarital sexual relations, thus reflecting the strong adherence to traditional values and existing legal frameworks. This is the result of a survey conducted by L’Économiste Sunergia. Only 6% of the population is in favor of legalizing extramarital sexual relations and 3% of Moroccans remain neutral.
8% of men embrace this social change compared to 4% of women.
By category, 15% of people aged 65 and over and 9% of young adults aged 25 to 34 are in favor of legalizing extramarital sexual relations. On the other hand, 96% of young people aged 18 to 24 express their opposition to this social change. According to the survey, socioeconomic status also influences opinions on cohabitation between unmarried couples. Thus, 11% of individuals with higher incomes, particularly those in socio-professional categories A and B, are in favor of extramarital sexual relations.
In Morocco, extramarital sexual relations are prohibited and punished by the Penal Code. They are considered illegal and contrary to the societal norms of the kingdom.
