Survey: 3 in 4 Moroccans Believe Premarital Sex Widespread, Challenging Social Norms

At least three out of four Moroccans believe that premarital relationships are very widespread in Morocco. This is revealed by a survey on "individual freedoms, representations and practices" carried out by a group of researchers and sociologists within the framework of the "Menassat" platform for social research and studies.

In Morocco, the perception of society on premarital sex is changing. According to the results of a study on "individual freedoms, representations and practices", at least three out of four Moroccans think that premarital relationships are very widespread in Morocco, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. According to the authors of this study, the exact figure is 76.7%.

In total, 60% of the respondents, across different regions of the country, say they personally know a young girl or a young man who have had premarital sex. For 50% of Moroccans, premarital sex falls within the "individual freedoms" of each person. For the other half of the respondents, it is a moral depravity (fassad) and a deviation from religion or even a lack of education.

The study report also indicates that only 15% of respondents believe that women have the right to freely dispose of their bodies in public. For them, women who do so are "free", educated, enlightened and open-minded. 0.6% of the people surveyed consider these same women as "infidels", while 31.3% say they are "easy girls", uneducated or simply perverse.

The authors of the study commented on these results. According to them, it is a positive evolution in a society described as "traditionalist, pious or, in any case, predominantly conservative".
