Surge in Online Hate Speech Targets Migrant Minors in Spain, Study Finds

According to the Spanish Observatory of Racism and Xenophobia (OBERAXE), around 30% of the posts recorded on social networks during the months of July and August contained hate messages towards migrant minors.
In its latest hate speech monitoring bulletin, the Spanish Observatory of Racism and Xenophobia under the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration recorded a total of 607 hate speech contents on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok, an increase of 9% compared to the previous bi-monthly bulletin.

These speeches directed against migrant minors represent 30% of the hate speech recorded on social networks during the months of July and August. They were 17.1% between May-June, reports Cadenaser. Xenophobic messages towards people of Maghrebi origin have doubled in just two months, from 7.9% in March-April to 15.3% in May-June, a period that saw the mass arrival of Moroccan migrants in the city of Ceuta, and to 16% in July-August.
The Observatory has been identified as a trusted indicator, which has allowed the removal of 122 contents of hate messages on social networks, i.e. 20.1% of the total number of publications.
