Surge in Food Poisoning Alarms Moroccan Consumer Groups, Calls for Stricter Restaurant Controls

In Morocco, the resurgence of food poisoning cases in several cities is worrying consumer rights associations, which are calling for strengthened controls in restaurants and fast food establishments to ensure compliance with hygiene and health safety rules.
Ali Chtour, president of the Moroccan Association for the Defense of Consumer Rights, explained that the increase in food poisoning cases is mainly due to the lack of hygiene and non-compliance with health safety standards in restaurants and fast food establishments.
Chtour stressed the need to strengthen the supervision of these establishments, with a particular emphasis on the control of food offered by street vendors near schools in order to protect the health of children.
The official also invited consumers to adopt a responsible consumption culture, stating that "the health of citizens takes precedence over everything, and it is unacceptable to tolerate those who are guilty of selling expired or unfit food for consumption."
Last week, about 30 people were victims of food poisoning in the Sbata region of Casablanca after eating at a fast food restaurant. The victims were taken to the Ben M’Sick regional hospital for necessary care.
