Suicide of Young Moroccan Migrant Sparks Protests in Spain’s Girona

An impressive crowd mobilized last Monday in front of the government headquarters in Girona, northern Spain, to denounce the death of a young Moroccan who was part of the program for unaccompanied migrant minors. The protesters hold the General Directorate for Childhood (DGAIA) responsible for his death.
His name was Hamza Louazgui. His suicide last Monday caused outrage in Girona and revolted other young people who felt powerless in this situation. The protesters brought flowers, candles and banners with the messages: "Hamza, we will never forget you" and "DGAIA responsible", reports El Español.
The call for protest was launched by the Girona Acull platform with the support of the Espai Antiracista Girona-Salt. For the leaders of this movement, the General Directorate of Childhood and Adolescence of the Generalitat (DGAIA), "leads young people to the street", so that it leaves them on the brink of despair. Between denunciation and indignation, the protesters plan to draw up in the coming days the list of all the young people expelled from Catalan homes, so that the Generalitat can readmit them.
For its part, the Generalitat, through the Department of Social Affairs, refutes the accusations of the protesters and specifies that it has "accompanied and protected" Hamza in recent years, while helping him to apply for a residence permit.
