Study Reveals Rising Religious Sentiment Among Moroccan Youth

A recent study by the Arab Barometer shows that within the Moroccan population, young Moroccans are the first to return to religion. The same is true for all the countries in the MENA region.
This return to religion varies depending on the number of years of study, life expectancy, income and levels of economic inequality. In Morocco, the last four years have been marked by an increase in the number of young people for whom religion has become an essential issue. This is a radical change since in the years 2018-2019, young people aged 18 to 29 were more likely than those aged 30 or over to declare that they were "not religious". The highest percentage in Morocco during this period was 22%, reports Hespress.
But today, the rate of "non-religious" young people is 10% in Morocco, while that of "religious" people is 90%. It is 91% and 87% in Algeria. Many researchers claim that "the level of religiosity increases in times of crisis", in the sense that "religion offers teaching and mechanisms that help individuals overcome the difficulties they encounter in life".
For example, during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Google searches for prayers reached the highest levels ever recorded. According to the Barometer, the results of all the waves stem not only from the examination of personal identity, but also from engagement in religious practices.
