Study: E-commerce Boom Could Create 3 Million Jobs in Morocco’s Digital Economy

The digital revolution will have a direct impact on economic opportunities, the job market and social well-being in Africa, according to a study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
The expansion of traditional retail networks, driven by the introduction of digital Marketplaces, helps stimulate the job market and financial rents through the creation of new needs. This will lead to the emergence of a new category of jobs, digital developers or marketers, and the revival of traditional small trades.
Thanks to the various training programs offered by e-commerce sites, artisans, merchants or other trades can be revitalized, and housewives or unemployed youth integrated into the labor market.
"While digital Marketplaces are often seen as disruptive elements in advanced economies, in the emerging economies of African countries, they can be huge catalysts for economic development," notes the co-author of the report.
The impact of digital Marketplaces on conventional commerce in Africa should not, however, be compared to that of advanced countries, due to the very low market penetration of physical stores.
On the other hand, the potential of this trade should be unlocked through the collaboration of the private and public sectors, through the establishment of infrastructure, the establishment of a favorable regulatory framework and the opening of markets.
