Studies in Belgium: The new "silver wall" threatening Moroccan students

Moroccan students will now have to justify 1,050 euros per month to obtain a Belgian visa, compared to 835 euros previously. This tightening of financial requirements aims to prevent precariousness and migratory abuses according to the Brussels authorities.

Morocco is one of the countries most affected by this substantial increase in admission criteria, with 536 applications rejected last year. From the next academic year, candidates will have to prove that they have the full amount required for twelve months, i.e. more than 12,000 euros.

The Minister of Asylum and Migration, Anneleen Van Bossuyt, specified that the former amount was no longer "adequate to cover the costs of accommodation, subsistence and stay in Belgium". The reform thus intends to protect students against financial difficulties and debts.

This new threshold will be indexed annually, reaching 1,062 euros for the 2026-2027 session. The Office of Foreigners also wishes to "prevent the diversion of the study visa into a migration route" and avoid students resorting to social assistance once on site.

For Moroccan nationals, for whom academic mobility to Europe is a lever for social advancement, this tightening could limit access to studies to only candidates with substantial bank guarantees, to the detriment of students from modest backgrounds.
