Stranded Moroccans in Spain to Sue Governments Over Travel Ban

Blocked in Morocco for nearly two months, Moroccans in Spain are tired of waiting. Faced with the damage suffered, a Spanish association defending the rights of Moroccans residing abroad intends to take legal action against the Moroccan and Spanish governments.

The situation of Moroccans blocked in their own country is worrying. While they are expected by their loved ones in the host country, these Moroccans residing abroad are victims of the consequences of the strong measures taken by Morocco to curb the spread of the virus, including the closure of airspace, reports Hespress.

For Mohamed Alami Soussi, president of the Association of Friends of the Moroccan People in Spain, the 7,000 Moroccans residing in Spain are suffering from the lack of attention from the leaders of the two countries. If Spain is not yet in a hurry to repatriate them, they are also despised in their own country by the authorities who favor Moroccans residing abroad who are blocked. Financial support had been released for the benefit of these Moroccan nationals to assist them.

According to the president of the association, several Moroccans have health or financial problems and they absolutely must go to Spain. He also cited the case of a Moroccan woman blocked in Nador, whose husband is dying in Madrid and who suffers from lung cancer. To these are added pregnant women, women whose infants have health problems and do not have the means to take care of their treatment in Morocco, since the public hospitals are overloaded with covid-19 patients," he specifies.

Faced with this injustice, Moroccans residing in Spain intend to take legal action with the Spanish State Prosecutor’s Office, starting Monday, May 11, for the "discrimination" they have suffered from the Spanish government, which constitutes "a violation of the Spanish constitution, which advocates equality". As for the Association of Friends of the Moroccan People in Spain, it also plans to take legal action against Morocco for having favored Moroccans residing abroad over those blocked on its own territory.
