Stranded Moroccan Workers Face Dire Conditions in Ceuta Amid Border Closure

Confined in a sports center, about fifty Moroccan cross-border workers, stranded in Ceuta, say they lack everything, even hygiene measures.

Surprised by the border closures, these hundreds of workers, namely cooks, carriers, masons or even plumbers, crossed the border every day to carry out various work in the city of Ceuta.

Most of these people, working for the day, say they were only informed of the decision on their return, reports L’Economiste. Since then, they have been condemned to live far from their families, without a penny for accommodation and the slightest change of clothes.

For the same media, these unfortunate people, originally from Tetouan, Fnideq or Mdiq, only ask to return home, even if it means going into quarantine to ensure their health situation. The bravest have already returned to Tetouan, swimming, making the reverse journey of illegal migrants.

While waiting to find a favorable solution for their return to their respective families, these Moroccan nationals stranded in Ceuta have survived during the first few weeks thanks to various associations that brought them pastries and hot drinks until the implementation of confinement in Spain.

Now gathered in a covered room without the slightest help for hygiene, they only survive thanks to solidarity actions from associations that are becoming increasingly rare, due to the tightening of confinement conditions in the Iberian neighbor.

In Guerguerat, stranded carriers are experiencing a similar situation, the only difference being that they are being taken care of by the Moroccan authorities. However, shortages of basic foodstuffs (vegetables, fruits, etc.) are to be feared on the other side of this border, closed since March 18, since it is through the Guerguerat crossing that the supply of essential goods from Morocco to Mauritania and West Africa circulates.
