Stranded Moroccan Expats Await Border Reopening in Spanish Enclaves

Parliamentarians Teresa López and Yolanda Merelo are asking the government for explanations on the situation of Moroccans residing abroad who came from Europe with their vehicles and are now stranded in Ceuta and Algeciras, waiting for the opening of the Moroccan borders.

In a question to the government, VOX (far-right) MP Teresa López wants to know "what kind of coordination has been established with the countries of origin of the people participating in the Marhaba Operation each year" and what measures it intends to take to avoid situations like the one currently being experienced by the city with the arrival of "several vehicles of Moroccans residing in Europe", waiting for the borders to open to return to Morocco.

"Morocco has announced that it will not open its borders before September 10," the MP recalled, adding that for the Marhaba operation, the kingdom has announced that "only the ports of Tanger Med and Nador will be operational to welcome the MREs."

The vehicles that left Algeciras "arrived in Ceuta without any prior filter and are now wandering around the city," says the MP, who asks the government "what went wrong for these vehicles to be stranded in Ceuta."

For her part, VOX senator for Ceuta, Yolanda Merelo, asks the government why it "allows the passage of these Moroccans, if the Moroccan borders are closed." She also wants to know what "health measures are being considered by the Ministry of Health in the face of the massive arrival of travelers in transit to Morocco, and who are freely circulating in the cities of Algeciras and Ceuta, with all the possible risks of Covid-19 contamination."
