Stellantis Shifts Electric Citroën C4 Production to Morocco, Keeps Gas Model in Spain

Stellantis plans to produce the electric version of the Citroën C4 at its Kenitra site in Morocco, while continuing to assemble the combustion engine model at the Villaverde plant in Madrid.
This decision by Stellantis is part of a strategic review process of its platform portfolio, and responds to a requirement for industrial economy, reports La Tribuna de Automoción. Rather than adapting the STLA Small exclusively dedicated to electric vehicles (EVs) to combustion engines, a more expensive option, the manufacturer has opted for a deep structural overhaul of the current CMP base to accommodate hybrid models with bodywork identical to electric ones.
This strategic choice would benefit the Villaverde plant in Madrid, which could thus continue assembling the combustion engine Citroën C4, while the Moroccan site in Kenitra should welcome the new generation of the electric C4. The Moroccan plant thus sees its strategic role grow in Stellantis’ production architecture. "We are convinced that Morocco constitutes a robust industrial base to support our European trajectory," said a Stellantis representative.
For his part, Antonio Filosa, future CEO of the group as of June 23, nevertheless assured during a recent visit to Vigo that "Spain remains a pillar of our production apparatus. Vigo’s industrial maturity is a striking illustration of this." In 2024, Stellantis assembled 981,000 vehicles in Spain.
