U.S. State Department Reaffirms Consultations on Western Sahara Issue

The issue of the Moroccan Sahara is a concern for the current occupant of the White House. State Department spokesman Ned Price stated that the Biden administration, while distancing itself from that of its predecessor, says it continues consultations with all stakeholders on this issue.

A few months ago, former US President Donald Trump recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. But, without withdrawing its recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara, the current administration has stated that it is not in "continuity" with Trump. Providing clarifications to the Spanish media La Vanguardia on this subject, spokesman Ned Price stated in a press briefing that "we are privately consulting the parties on the best way to end the violence and reach a lasting settlement," reports Telquel. Moreover, "I have nothing more to announce for now, but I will certainly contest the characterization that there has been continuity, including with respect to our approach to the region, since the last administration," he continued.

Moreover, the Sahara issue "is an issue we have discussed directly with our Moroccan, Spanish and other regional counterparts. But I think more broadly, there is little continuity with respect to our approach to the region at large," Ned Price said, before adding: "I have nothing to announce for now, but I think if you look at the Western Sahara in the context of a broader approach to the region by the previous administration in the context of the Abraham Accords, that’s where you see a certain discontinuity between the approach we have followed and the one we have adopted compared to what the previous administration has done."

To recall, since taking office, Joe Biden has not really gone back on the issue of the recognition of the Moroccan Sahara. And presently, the response of the US State Department spokesman gives food for thought.
