The start date of Ramadan in Morocco is known
The start date of the 2026 Ramadan month is now known. It has just been revealed by astronomical calculations.
Moroccans should begin the month of Ramadan on Thursday, February 19, 2026. While the Ministry of Endowments retains the prerogative of the official announcement, astronomical data already indicate that fasting cannot begin earlier due to the lack of visibility of the crescent on Tuesday evening.
The date of Thursday, February 19, is imposed according to the calculations of the astronomer Hassan Talibi, a member of the Islamic Project for the Observation of the Lunar Crescent. The determining factor lies in the evening of Wednesday, February 18: the scientific criteria predict a lunar crescent aged about 30 hours, visible for 72 minutes and positioned 13 degrees above the horizon. These conditions make visual observation possible in most of the Islamic world, thus validating the next day as the first day of the sacred month, reports Médias24.
This calendar technically excludes a start on Wednesday. Going back in the chronology, the conjunction (Moon-Sun-Earth alignment) is scheduled for Tuesday, February 17 at 12:02 PM. However, the interval between this phenomenon and sunset will be too short to allow any visual observation that evening, which will correspond to the 28th of Sha’aban in Morocco.
