Spanish Watermelon Imports from Morocco Surge 643% in a Decade

Spanish imports of Moroccan watermelons have reached 78.76 million kilos in the current campaign, an increase of 643% compared to the 2013/2014 campaign.
The volume of Moroccan watermelons imported by Spain accounts for 65% of the total volume, or 78.76 million kilos for 52.48 million euros (0.67 euro/kilo), reports Horto Info, based on data from the Estacom statistical service (Icex-Tax Agency).
These figures place Morocco at the top of Spain’s watermelon suppliers. Senegal comes in second with 19.34 million kilos (16.04%) for a value of 10.85 million euros (0.56 euro/kilo), followed by Mauritania with 12.63 million kilos (10.48%) for 10.9 million euros (0.86 euro/kilo). France is in fourth place with 2.85 million kilos, for 1.95 million euros (0.68 euro/kilo), and Brazil, sixth, with 1.94 million kilos for 1.71 million euros (0.88 euro/kilo).
Spain bought watermelons from other countries for 80.98 million euros during the 2022/2023 campaign, at an average price of 0.67 euros per kilo, an increase of 462.36% compared to 2013/2014. In total, the country imported a total of 120.55 million kilos of watermelons for the 2022/2023 season (September 1 to August 31), an increase of 344% compared to the 2013/2014 campaign.
