Spanish PM to Visit Morocco, Aiming to Boost Bilateral Relations

The head of the Spanish Executive is expected in Morocco on December 17th. This upcoming visit by Pedro Sanchez could give a good boost to Moroccan-Spanish relations.

The heads of government are to co-chair the 12th High-Level Meeting in Rabat, reports EFE. In June 2015, Pedro Sanchez had co-chaired this high-level meeting in Madrid with his Moroccan counterpart. In addition to the items on the agenda, the two heads of the Executive could also discuss two sensitive issues, namely the thorny issue of migration and the issue of the Moroccan Sahara. After the initial discussions of the Spanish Interior Minister with his counterpart Abdelouafi Laftit on the migration issue, Spain could once again call on Morocco to counter the many attempts by illegal migrants to enter its coasts.

In 2019, Morocco had managed to contain more than 50% of the irregular migration pressure on the Andalusian coasts. The kingdom had diverted the irregular immigration networks to other routes, including those leading to the Canary Islands. In this regard, Morocco should benefit from 140 million euros from the European Union to succeed in this challenge. As for Madrid, it has committed to putting pressure on the EU so that the kingdom receives these funds.

During this visit, Spanish investors are announced among the delegation of the head of government, including Antonio Garamendi, president of the Spanish Confederation of Entrepreneurial Organizations, and Joé Luis Binet, president of the Chamber of Commerce. For now, no information has leaked out about the rest of Pedro Sanchez’s delegation.
