Spanish Tourist Warns: Solo Female Travel in Morocco's Marrakech Raises Safety Concerns

After a stay in Marrakech, a Spanish tourist warns female travelers against going to Morocco alone.

In a TikTok video, Clara Retamero shared her experience of solo travel in Morocco, claiming that she did not feel safe walking the streets of Marrakech. According to her, the people of Marrakech are always looking for an interaction, an excuse to start a conversation. "They try to sell you something all the time," she said.

"To be honest, I don’t consider it a country where you can go alone. Not because it’s dangerous, honestly, but because people here are not used to traveling alone and that’s it," explained the Spanish tourist, who said that other women share her opinion. "A Moldovan told me that she had been chased and that she would not recommend traveling alone. An American told me that she wouldn’t do it either."

The young woman explains why she does not recommend traveling alone in Morocco and more specifically in Marrakech. "I think it’s because you don’t make as many friends as if you were alone in Thailand." Beyond the insecurity, the unsanitary conditions and poverty are the two factors that repel Clara Retamero the most.

However, the young Spaniard invites those who dream of discovering Morocco not to give up their pleasure. "If you want to go alone because it’s your dream, go for it," she said, before warning women who wish to have this experience: "Don’t be as reckless as me." She refers to a top she wore that seemed to displease the people of Marrakech. "Everyone is looking at me."
