Spanish Tomato Exports Plummet as Moroccan Imports Surge 51% in Five Years

Imports of Moroccan tomatoes into Spain have increased by 51% in five years. During the same time, Spanish tomato exports have fallen by 25%.
From January to October 2022, Spain’s imports of Moroccan tomatoes increased by 51%, according to the latest data from the Estacom statistical service (Icex-Tax Agency) published by the Hortoinfo portal. In detail, Spanish imports of Moroccan tomatoes went from 44.5 million kilos in 2018 to 67.3 million in 2022, an increase of nearly 23 million kilos.
During the same period, Spanish tomato exports have been declining since 2018, going from 644.5 million kilos of tomatoes that year to 482 million kilos in 2022 (January to October), a drop of 162.5 million kilos. On the other hand, the value of exports has increased, reaching 871.1 million euros in 2022 (1.81 euros/kilo) compared to 727.5 million euros in 2018 (1.13 euros/kilo), an improvement in the average price of 0.68 euros per kilo.
