Spanish Tomato Exports Drop 20% as Moroccan Imports Surge 32%

Spain has increased its imports of Moroccan tomatoes by 32.58% and reduced its tomato exports by 20.49% by the end of October compared to the same period in 2018, according to Estacom data.
Spain imported 58.96 million kilos of Moroccan tomatoes in 2021 (January to October) compared to 44.47 million kilos in 2018, an increase of 14.49 million kilos. At the same time, it exported 644.54 million kilos of tomatoes against 512.48 million kilos in 2021, a decrease of 132.06 million kilos.
The revenue from Spanish tomato exports increased despite the drop in export volume, rising from 727.51 million euros in 2018 to 745.9 million euros in 2021. The average price of tomato purchases in Morocco has increased over the same period, to stand at 1.07 euros/kilo in 2021 against 0.95 euros/kilo in 2018, an increase of 0.11 euros per kilo.
