Spanish Prosecutors Seek 164-Year Sentence, €300 Million Fine for Drug Trafficking Ring

Fifteen members of a drug trafficking network arrested in October 2019, during an operation carried out in Algeciras, Huelva, Seville, Malaga, Granada and Ceuta, will be informed of their fate on October 27 at the provincial court of Huelva. The prosecution has requested against them a sentence of 164 years and three months in prison.

In addition to custodial sentences, the prosecution is asking the judge to order these 15 people to pay a fine of more than 300 million euros for the crime of belonging to a criminal group and for the aggravating circumstance of recidivism for some of the accused. "Since March 2019, the accused have developed illicit activities consisting in particular of introducing hashish by sea on the Spanish coasts," explains the prosecution in the indictment.

The accused "have made numerous trips to Morocco to finalize the details of the constant supply of hashish," adds the prosecution, specifying that they acquired a 12-meter semi-rigid boat, to which they adapted three Yamaha 350 HP engines, in order "to launch the drug trafficking." The activities were launched in the Bay of Algeciras in March 2019 with this boat, which was found abandoned in April 2019 in Malaga.

The traffickers then acquired a new boat that allowed them to transport the drugs between Cadiz and Huelva on July 10, 26, 30 and 31, 2019. It was during this period that they were arrested by the security forces, who also seized 60 bales containing 1,800 kilos of hashish worth an estimated more than 2.8 million euros.
