Spanish Prison Fire Kills Moroccan-Born Inmate, Authorities Investigate Arson

A Spaniard of Moroccan origin, detained in the Puig de les Basses prison, near Figueres (Girona), died on Sunday from the effects of a fire started in his cell by another inmate.
The Moroccan naturalized Spaniard, serving a sentence of more than 13 years in prison for violent thefts, died on Sunday in a fire started by another inmate. He was in his cell with another inmate when the other approached and set fire to it, indicate prison sources to El Periodico. The cell of the perpetrator of the act was also burned a few moments later by another inmate. The prison officers managed to save the inmates, but the Moroccan did not survive.
Among the officers, two lost consciousness after inhaling a large amount of smoke. They were taken to the Figueres hospital. As for the two inmates (a Moroccan and an Algerian) who set fire to the cells, they were taken to a health center in Palamós.
