Monday 5 July 2021, by Sylvanus

A narco-drone loaded with cannabis from the Moroccan Rif to transport it to the Andalusian beaches was seized in Andalusia. In total, about ten people were arrested in Orléans and Spain.

A first. The investigators of the Anti-Drug Office (Ofast) seized a narco-drone during a search in an isolated house in Vélez-Málaga in Andalusia in June, reports Le Journal du Dimanche. They also arrested about ten people in Orléans and Spain.

According to them, the traffickers were trying to transport several tens of kilos of cannabis resin by air from the Moroccan Rif to the beaches of the Costa del Sol, more than 150 kilometers to the north, using a drone. This would be a test phase of an apparatus with the following characteristics: 5 meters wingspan, four rotors, seven hours of autonomy and a top speed of around 170 km/h.

"Until now, the use of drones by French criminals was limited to parachuting drugs or phones in prison or to secure a delivery area, says Commissioner William Hippert, from the Information, Intelligence and Strategic Analysis Service on Organized Crime (Sirasco). Drug transports by drones have been reported in Morocco but concerned very short distances to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta."
